La Belle Aude, la Sorcière et le Diable

Fresque réalisée lors de la 8ème édition de Street'Art'Magnac dans le Gers. Pour peindre sur cette jolie façade au bord de la route, j'ai souhaité m'inspirer des contes de Gascogne. Un en particulier a retenu mon attention, celui de la Belle Aude, la Sorcière et le Diable.
Il y a longtemps vivait en Gascogne un seigneur prénommé Simon, tourmenté par un mal inconnu. Un jour, une jeune fille du nom de Aude, vint le voir et lui avoua qu'elle avait découvert qu'il avait vendu son âme au diable. Stupéfait de cet aveu, il lui confirma que lors d'une partie de chasse survenue deux ans auparavant, il avait accidentellement blessé à mort son chien préféré. Fou de rage et de douleur, il aurait hurlé qu'il préférerait vendre son âme plutôt que de perdre son chien favori. Le Diable, qui avait entendu ces paroles, sauva le chien. Mais l'âme de Simon était à lui désormais, et était devenu la victime d'une sorcière qui se jouait de lui. Aude décida donc d'aller sauver l'âme de Simon, par amour pour lui. Après avoir trouvé la sorcière, elle lui demanda d'appeler le Diable. Elle lui proposa d'échanger son âme contre celle de son bien aimé. Satan accepta et demanda à ce que ce pacte soit scellé par écrit. Il lui dicta ce qu'elle devait écrire en lettres de feu : "Moi, Aude, fille de Thibaud, cède à celui qui peut l'acheter, mon âme en échange de l'âme du Seigneur Simon". Elle s'exécuta, signa et demanda à Satan d'en faire de même. Celui-ci, pressé d'en finir, relut le parchemin à la va vite et signa à son tour. Mais la maligne Aude avait changé le texte et au lieu d'écrire "âme" avait écrit "âne". Le Diable était furieux d'avoir été dupé de la sorte mais trop tard, le pacte était scellé. De retour au village, Aude retrouva Simon qui avait retrouvé sa joie de vivre et ils se marièrent. On raconte que jamais le Diable n'osa venir réclamer son âne tant il se sentait ridicule, et on n'entendit plus parler de lui dans le pays.
---------Mural painting made during the 8th edition of Street'Art'Magnac in the Gers. To paint on this pretty facade at the edge of the road, I wanted to draw something inspired by the tales of Gascony. One in particular caught my attention: Aude The Beauty, the Witch and the Devil.
A long time ago lived in Gascony a lord named Simon, tormented by an unknown evil. One day, a young girl named Aude came to see him and confessed that she had discovered he had sold his soul to the devil. Stunned by this confession, he confirmed to her that during a hunting trip two years earlier, he had accidentally injured his favorite dog to death. Mad with rage and pain, he screamed that he would rather sell his soul than lose his favorite dog. The Devil, who had heard these words, saved the dog. But Simon's soul was his now, and was harrased by a witch. Aude therefore decided to go and save Simon's soul, out of love for him. After finding the witch, she asked her to call the Devil. She offered to exchange her soul for Simon's. Satan agreed and demanded that this pact be sealed in writing. He dictated to her what she should write in letters of fire: "I, Aude, daughter of Thibaud, yield to whoever can buy it, my soul in exchange for the soul of Lord Simon". She complied, signed and asked Satan to do the same. In a hurry to finish, he read the parchment hastily and signed it too. But the clever Aude had changed the text and instead of writing "soul" ("âme" in french) had written "donkey" ("âne"). The Devil was furious to have been duped like this, but it was too late, the pact was sealed. Back in the village, Aude found Simon who had regained his joy of living and they got married. It is said that the Devil never dared to come and claim his donkey because he felt so ridiculous, and we heard no more of him in the country.
